Building a life in Toronto while a plot waits in Kitengela?
Are you one of the many Kenyans in Canada trying to run a home, a plot and a family back in Kenya from eight time zones away? Then you know the feeling. Your day starts as Nairobi’s day ends.
You call your fundi at 6am before work. You chase a cousin about a title search on your lunch break. You lie awake wondering whether the house walls really went up last month.
Kenyans in Canada work hard for every dollar sent home. You deserve to know exactly where each one goes.
OnGround Africa is your person on the ground in Kenya. We visit, check, queue, collect and report back, with photos and video on every job.
We are not lawyers, not a bank, not an immigration agent and not a government office. When a licensed professional is needed, we bring in a licensed Kenyan advocate or a licensed agent.
What this page covers
- The everyday problems Kenyans in Canada bring to us
- Consular help from the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa
- Property, building, family and paperwork support at home
- Our prices and how to start on WhatsApp

What do Kenyans in Canada ask us for most?
Every family is different. Still, the same handful of needs come up again and again from Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax and Vancouver.
Property and land
- A plot you want to buy but have never seen
- A title search before you send a deposit
- An honest look at land a relative says is ready
Building at home
- A house going up with a fundi you only know by phone
- Progress photos you can actually trust
- Someone to count blocks and check the roof before you pay the next stage
Family and care
- Check in visits to ageing parents
- Gifts delivered on birthdays, graduations and Mother’s Day
- A pickup at JKIA when someone flies in
Paperwork
- Certificates collected, authenticated and couriered to Canada
- KRA PIN and nil return help
- Car logbooks, powers of attorney and company papers
Kenyans in Canada rarely need just one of these. Most clients start with one job and keep us for the next.
Why not just ask a relative?
Relatives help out of love and that is precious. But they have jobs, children and their own worries. Asking them to stand in a land registry queue or argue with a fundi can strain a family.
A paid person who does this as a job takes that pressure off. Kenyans in Canada tell us the biggest relief is not having to chase anyone for news.
How does the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa help Kenyans in Canada?
For anything only the government can do, your first stop is the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa. It is the official Kenyan mission for Kenyans in Canada.
Its website lists consular services that include passports, visas and a section it describes as citizenship, birth and marriage certificates, drivers licences and more. It also lists an emergency certificate, issued for one way travel to Kenya.
The High Commission website says e passports are applied for and paid online through the government portal, eCitizen.
Mobile consular services
The High Commission sometimes runs services outside Ottawa. Its Vancouver announcement described a mobile consular service on 20, 21 and 22 February 2025.
That announcement listed passport applications, birth registration, ID card applications and applications to regain citizenship or make a dual declaration. Watch the High Commission website for future dates near you.
Where we fit in
The High Commission handles official applications. We handle the running in Kenya that sits around them, such as collecting a document from a Nairobi office or couriering papers to you.
We never claim to speak for any mission. For official advice, Kenyans in Canada should always go to the High Commission first.
Buying land in Kenya while you live in Canada
Land is where Kenyans in Canada most often lose money. A photo on WhatsApp is not a plot and a smiling broker is not a title.
What we do before you pay
- Visit the plot and film the beacons, access road and neighbours
- Check the location against the map or sketch you were given
- Talk to neighbours about who owns and uses the land
- Coordinate a land search through a licensed Kenyan advocate
A land search checks the official record. Our land search coordination is $120 plus government and advocate fees.
Red flags we report
- A seller who will not meet in person
- A price far below others nearby
- Pressure to pay a deposit today
- Someone else farming or living on the land
How a land check visit runs
We agree the plot details with you and the seller. On the day, we meet at the site, walk the boundary and film each beacon. We ask neighbours how long the seller has owned the land and whether anyone else claims it.
You get a short report the same day with photos, video and our notes. If something feels wrong, we say so plainly. Kenyans in Canada tell us that honest no is often worth more than a quick yes.

Kenyans in Canada can also ask for a property inspection visit. It is $120 in Nairobi and nearby areas, with further areas adding travel quoted upfront.
Building a house in Kenya from Canada without losing sleep
Many Kenyans in Canada build in stages as money allows. That is smart. It also means months between payments, when anything can happen on site.
Our construction monitoring plan
For $390 per month we make two site visits a month and send a written report. Each report includes photos and video.
- Progress since the last visit, compared with what you were told
- Materials on site, counted where possible
- Workers present on the day
- Quality issues we can see, such as cracks or poor finishing
- Questions for you to raise with your contractor
We are not engineers or quantity surveyors. If you need a technical opinion, ask your contractor or a licensed professional. Our job is to be your honest eyes on the ground.
Why this matters for Kenyans in Canada
You are paying in stages from far away, often from a Canadian salary after tax and rent. Each stage should be checked before the next payment leaves your account. Two visits a month gives you a regular, independent view.
See our construction monitoring page for the full details.
Looking after parents and family at home
Distance is hardest when someone you love needs help. Winter in Canada can make home feel even further away. Kenyans in Canada often tell us the guilt is heavier than the cost.
Family check in visits
For $60 we visit a parent or relative, have a chat and send you photos and a short update. You hear how they are, what they need and how the house looks.
We can also run small errands on the same trip. Medicine pickups, shopping or paying a bill in person start from $50 as an errand in Nairobi.
Gift delivery
Birthdays, graduations and anniversaries still matter across the ocean. Gift delivery in Nairobi is $60 plus the gift cost.
Airport pickups
Is a parent flying out to visit you, or a child flying home for holidays? We meet them at JKIA. Airport pickup or drop is $60.
What a visit report looks like
You get photos of your parent, if they agree and of the home. We note anything that needs attention, such as a leaking tap, low food stocks or a missed clinic date. You decide what happens next.
Some Kenyans in Canada book a visit every month. Others book one before a big decision, such as hiring a carer or moving a parent closer to family.
See more on family check in visits. Every visit comes with photos, so you see what we see.
Documents Kenyans in Canada need from home
Canadian offices often ask Kenyans in Canada for papers from home. Immigration files, credential checks and job offers all need proof of who you are and what you have done.
Papers we help with
- Police clearance certificates, often called good conduct certificates
- Birth and marriage certificates
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- HELB and CRB clearance certificates for jobs back home
- KRA documents and nil returns
Authentication and the apostille question
Canada joined the Apostille Convention, with the Hague Conference status table showing entry into force on 11 January 2024. Kenya was not on that table when we checked.
That means Kenyan documents usually go through Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication instead of an apostille. A Canadian office may also ask for further steps. Always ask the office what it accepts.
We take your papers through the right offices in Nairobi, then courier them to Canada. Kenyans in Canada usually choose tracked express for originals because the distance is long. Document pickup and courier abroad is $75 plus courier at cost.
See our full Kenya documents from abroad service. For tax filing, see KRA nil returns from abroad.
Time zones, payments and staying in touch
Nairobi is several hours ahead of where Kenyans in Canada live. For Kenyans in Canada on the east coast, the gap is usually seven or eight hours depending on daylight saving. On the west coast it is about ten or eleven.
That gap is one reason relatives miss calls and fundis go quiet. We work around it so Kenyans in Canada do not have to set alarms for 3am.
How we keep you updated
- Updates on WhatsApp in your time zone
- Photos and video sent the same day as each visit
- A short written summary you can read on your commute
- Calls booked at times that suit Canadian mornings or evenings
How you pay
We quote in US dollars. Clients can pay by card, PayPal, bank or M Pesa. We confirm payment options with your quote.
You get a written quote first and pay only after you approve it. No surprises, no extra charges added later without your agreement.
Keeping records for your own peace of mind
Every job leaves a trail in our WhatsApp chat. Dates, photos, receipts and notes sit in one place. Kenyans in Canada often save these for tax, family or legal reasons later.
If a relative or contractor ever disputes what happened, you have the proof. That alone makes many clients sleep better.
Planning a trip home
Coming back for Christmas or a wedding? Tell us your dates early. We can line up land visits, office errands and family check ins for the days you are home, so you spend your time with people rather than in queues.
Starting a business or investing at home from Canada
Many Kenyans in Canada dream of a business at home. A shop, a farm, a rental block or a small import line. The dream is good.
The risk is in the details you cannot see from Canada.
Registering a company
Our company registration support for a private limited company is $900 for our fee, plus government and advocate fees. A licensed Kenyan advocate handles the legal steps and we handle the running. Read more on company registration in Kenya.
Opening a bank account
Bank account opening support is $300. We help you understand what the bank asks for and handle the visits that need a person in Nairobi.
Checking a supplier or partner
Before you send money to a supplier, we can visit them. A supplier verification visit with report in the Nairobi area is $250. We check that the business exists, take photos and ask the questions you would ask.
Testing the market
Not sure if your idea will sell? A market research brief starts from $600. We visit shops, talk to buyers and report what we find in plain words.
Official investment help
The State Department for Diaspora Affairs says on diaspora.go.ke that its Diaspora Investment Support Office provides investment pathways. Kenyans in Canada can use that alongside our ground support.
A sensible order
- Test the idea with research
- Check suppliers and partners
- Register the company with an advocate
- Open the bank account
- Start small and watch the numbers
Kenyans in Canada who follow this order tend to lose far less money in the first year. Skipping steps is where things go wrong.
