Working long shifts in Dubai while the house at home stands half built?
Are you one of the many Kenyans in the UAE sending money home every month, hoping the house, the plot and the family are all doing as well as you are told? Most people in the Gulf know that quiet worry.
You work long shifts in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. You send money after every payday. Then a photo arrives that looks the same as last month’s photo.
Kenyans in the UAE often work on fixed contracts. Every dirham saved is meant to build something lasting back home. You deserve to see it being built.
OnGround Africa is your person on the ground in Kenya. We visit sites, check on family, collect papers and send you honest reports with photos and video.
We are not lawyers, not a bank, not a recruitment agency and not an immigration agent. When a licensed professional is needed, we bring in a licensed Kenyan advocate or a licensed agent.
What this page covers
- What Kenyans in the UAE ask us for most
- Kenyan missions in the UAE and official help
- Building, land, family and paperwork support at home
- Our prices and how to start on WhatsApp

What do Kenyans in the UAE need help with at home?
The Gulf is close to Kenya by air, but a contract job does not leave Kenyans in the UAE much time to fly home. The same needs come up again and again.
Building and land
- A house being built in stages from monthly savings
- A plot bought through a relative or broker
- Rentals that should be earning but are not
Family
- Children living with grandparents or relatives
- Ageing parents who need a visit and a chat
- School fees and bills that need paying in person
Documents
- Police clearance certificates for a new Gulf contract
- Papers that need authentication and an embassy stamp
- Certificates collected and couriered to the UAE
Coming and going
- Airport pickups at JKIA when you land for leave
- Errands lined up for the short days you are home
Kenyans in the UAE often tell us their biggest need is simple. They want someone neutral who tells them the truth.
Why a neutral person helps
When a relative manages your money, every question can feel like an accusation. A neutral visit removes that tension. We report what we see and you decide what to do with it.
Many Kenyans in the UAE say this keeps family relationships warmer. Nobody has to defend themselves, because the photos speak.
Where are the Kenyan missions for Kenyans in the UAE?
Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs lists its diplomatic missions. For the UAE, it lists missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The listed contact emails are abudhabi@mfa.go.ke and dubai@mfa.go.ke. For passports, emergency travel papers and other official services, Kenyans in the UAE should contact these missions directly.
Official diaspora help
The State Department for Diaspora Affairs runs diaspora.go.ke. Its site lists consular help, an online form to report emergencies such as arrest, lost passports or trafficking and a hotline on +254 114 757 002, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00 East Africa Time.
The site says to contact the nearest Kenyan mission first in an emergency. If you cannot reach one, it says to contact its consular team.
Where we fit in
The missions and the diaspora department handle official matters. We handle the practical running in Kenya, such as collecting papers, visiting family or checking a building site.
We never speak for any government office. For official advice, always go to the mission first.
Checking a recruitment agency before a relative travels
Many Kenyans in the UAE later help a sibling, cousin or friend find work in the Gulf. That kindness can go wrong if the recruitment agency is not genuine.
The diaspora department’s site says you can verify whether an agency holds a National Employment Authority licence before paying, signing or travelling. Use that check every time, even when a friend recommends the agency.
How we can help on the ground
- Visit the agency’s Nairobi office and confirm it exists at the address given
- Photograph the premises and signage
- Ask the questions your relative is too nervous to ask
- Send you a short report with photos
We do not judge whether an agency is licensed. That is for the official check. We give you eyes on the office and the people.
Warning signs to watch
- No physical office, only a phone number
- Pressure to pay large fees quickly
- Promises that sound too good for the role
- Reluctance to show a contract before travel
Helping a relative prepare
Before travel, sit with your relative on a video call. Go through the contract line by line. Make sure they know the name of the employer, the job title and the salary in writing.
Ask them to share copies of their passport and contract with you before they fly. Kenyans in the UAE who have been through it know how much those copies help if anything goes wrong.
A careful week now can save a family months of pain. Kenyans in the UAE know better than anyone how much rides on the right agency.
Building a house in Kenya on a Gulf salary
Building in stages is the way most Kenyans in the UAE build. Money goes home after each payday. A wall, a roof, then windows.
The risk for Kenyans in the UAE is that each stage is paid for before anyone checks it. Photos from the fundi may be old, borrowed or taken from a flattering angle.
Our construction monitoring plan
For $390 per month we make two site visits a month and send a written report with photos and video.
- Work done since the last visit
- Materials on site, counted where possible
- Workers present on the day
- Visible quality problems, such as cracks or poor finishing
- Questions to raise with your contractor
We are not engineers or quantity surveyors. For technical opinions, ask a licensed professional. Our job is honest eyes on site.
A single check before a big payment
Not ready for a monthly plan? Many Kenyans in the UAE start with one visit. A property inspection visit in Nairobi and nearby areas is $120.
Further areas add travel quoted upfront.
Read our guides to construction monitoring in Kenya and how to build a house in Kenya from abroad.
Buying land at home while you work in the Gulf
Land deals move fast and contract workers have little time. Many Kenyans in the UAE buy land on the strength of one phone call. That combination is exactly what fraudsters look for when targeting Kenyans in the UAE.
Before you send a deposit
- We visit the plot and film the beacons, road access and surroundings
- We talk to neighbours about who owns and uses the land
- We coordinate a land search through a licensed Kenyan advocate
- We report what we see, including anything that worries us
Land search coordination is $120 plus government and advocate fees. It checks the official record, which is the step people most often skip.
Red flags we report
- A seller who will not meet in person
- A price far below nearby plots
- Pressure to pay today before others do
- Someone else living on or farming the land
See our page on land search in Kenya for more detail. A land check costs a small part of a deposit and it can save the whole thing.
Looking after children and parents back home
Many Kenyans in the UAE leave children with grandparents or relatives while they work. That takes great trust on both sides. A neutral visit now and then can help everyone.
Family check in visits
For $60 we visit and send you photos and a short update. We see the home, chat with your family and tell you what they need.
Some parents ask us to check school uniforms, food stocks or a leaking roof.
Visiting a school
With your permission and the school’s agreement, we can visit to collect a report form or confirm fees are paid. Kenyans in the UAE often find it hard to reach a school office by phone during the Gulf working day. Others simply want to see their mother smile on video.
Errands and gifts
Paying a school bill in person, buying medicine or collecting a parcel starts from $50 as an errand in Nairobi. Gift delivery in Nairobi is $60 plus the gift cost.
Airport pickups
Landing for leave at JKIA after a long night shift? We meet you, or your family, at the airport. Airport pickup or drop is $60.
Read more on family check in visits. Every visit comes with photos and a written note.
Documents Kenyans in the UAE need from Kenya
Gulf employers and authorities often ask Kenyans in the UAE for Kenyan papers before a new contract or a visa renewal. A police clearance certificate is the most common.
Authentication and attestation
The Hague Conference status table did not list Kenya or the UAE when we checked. So the apostille route does not apply between them.
Instead, Kenyan papers usually go through Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Nairobi. The UAE Embassy in Nairobi’s page lists attestation and digital attestation among its services for individuals.
Always ask your employer or the UAE authority exactly which stamps they need. Then we plan the route.
How we help
- We take your certificate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for authentication
- We take it on to the embassy where an agent is allowed
- We collect, photograph and courier it to you in the UAE
Certificate of good conduct support is $120. Document pickup and courier abroad is $75 plus courier at cost.
See our pages on the certificate of good conduct from abroad and apostille in Kenya for the full process.
Planning for the day your Gulf contract ends
Most Kenyans in the UAE do not plan to stay forever. One day the contract ends and home calls. The smartest time to prepare is now, while the salary is still coming in.
Get your tax record in order
Many people leave Kenya with a KRA PIN and forget about it. Unfiled returns can cause penalties and trouble later. KRA nil return filing is $40 per year and KRA PIN support is $80 if you need a PIN or an update.
See our help with KRA nil returns from abroad if you have years to catch up on.
Check that your rentals really earn
If you built rental rooms, a visit can confirm how many are occupied and what condition they are in. A property inspection visit is $120 in Nairobi and nearby areas.
Think about a business
Many Kenyans in the UAE plan a business for their return. A market research brief from $600 can test an idea before you spend your savings. A supplier verification visit with report in the Nairobi area is $250.
Register properly
If you want a company, our company registration support for a private limited company is $900 for our fee, plus government and advocate fees. A licensed Kenyan advocate handles the legal side.
A simple plan for the last year of your contract
- File any missing KRA returns
- Check your plot, house or rentals in person through us
- Test your business idea with research
- Open or update your Kenyan bank account
- Book a JKIA pickup for the day you land
Kenyans in the UAE who do this land home ready to start, not ready to fix. That difference can protect years of savings.
Keep one folder for everything
Save every receipt, title search, report and photo in one folder on your phone and in the cloud. When you finally sit down at home to plan, you will have the full picture in front of you. Kenyans in the UAE can ask us to add our reports to that folder after every visit, so nothing gets lost between payday and leave.
Bringing your car or goods home
Some people ship household goods or a car from the Gulf. Before the goods arrive, ask a licensed clearing agent what applies. We can visit the agent’s office in Nairobi and report back so you know who you are dealing with.

What makes us different
We are not a relative with mixed feelings or a contractor with a stake in the outcome. We are a paid, neutral person who reports what we see. Kenyans in the UAE use us precisely because we have no reason to soften bad news.
Easy timing
The UAE is one hour ahead of Nairobi. That makes calls easy for Kenyans in the UAE, even after a late shift.
