Who do you call when home needs something done today?
How many Kenyans in the USA have sent money for a job at home and then waited months for a photo that never came? Too many.
It is not always dishonesty. Often it is just distance.
Your cousin is busy. Your friend means well but has a job.
The fundi says the roof is done. Nobody can check.
Meanwhile you are on a night shift in Houston, or driving between clients in Atlanta. Kenya is hours ahead and the call never happens at a good time.
This is the daily reality for many Kenyans in the USA. You want to help home, yet the hours and the miles get in the way.
What we do
OnGround Africa is your person on the ground in Kenya. We do the errands, visits, checks and paperwork that need someone physically there.
You get photo and video proof on every job. You get updates on WhatsApp at hours that suit you.
We built this service for Kenyans in the USA and other people abroad who are tired of chasing. You send one message and we do the running.
Who is behind it
Our founder, Patrick Maina, has delivered more than 870 projects over 8 years for clients in over 56 countries. He holds 452 five star reviews.
He has shipped certificates to the US for clients and produced film scenes in Kibera for an international artist. One client from Ethiopia wrote that “Patrick does amazing groundwork for those who are remote from Kenya.”
What we are not
We are not lawyers, a bank, a government agent or an immigration agent. When a licensed professional is needed, we bring in a licensed Kenyan advocate or agent and show you their fee first.

How do time zones work for Kenyans in the USA?
Kenya runs on East Africa Time all year, with no daylight saving. The United States changes its clocks twice a year, so the gap moves.
| Your US time zone | Kenya is ahead by (winter) | Kenya is ahead by (summer) |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern (New York, Atlanta, Boston) | 8 hours | 7 hours |
| Central (Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis) | 9 hours | 8 hours |
| Mountain (Denver) | 10 hours | 9 hours |
| Pacific (Seattle, Los Angeles) | 11 hours | 10 hours |
What that means in practice
When you wake up at 7am in Dallas, it is already afternoon in Nairobi. Offices are open for a few more hours.
When you finish a late shift, Nairobi is starting its morning. That is often the perfect moment to send us a voice note.
For Kenyans in the USA on the West Coast, the gap is widest. A 9pm message from Los Angeles lands at 7am or 8am in Nairobi, just as the city wakes up.
Weekends
Your Saturday morning is a Saturday afternoon in Nairobi. Some offices are closed, yet many errands and visits still happen.
We plan weekend jobs around what is open. Family visits and site checks often work well on weekends.
How we handle it
We send updates when you are awake, not at 3am. If something urgent comes up, we ask first how you want to be told.
The time gap can even work in your favour. Kenyans in the USA often wake up to a job finished overnight, with photos waiting on WhatsApp.
Tell us your preferred window. We stick to it.
What can we do at home for Kenyans in the USA?
Here are the jobs Kenyans in the USA ask about most. Each comes with a written quote first and photo proof after.
Family and errands
- Family check in visits for parents and grandparents.
- Gift delivery in Nairobi for birthdays and graduations.
- Airport pickup or drop at JKIA for visiting relatives.
- General errands, from paying a bill in person to collecting a parcel.
See our family check in visits page for how a visit works.
A visit can be as simple as tea and a chat with your mother. Or it can include checking her medicine stock, the water tank and whether the house help is managing.
Urgent family needs
Sometimes home needs help fast. A parent is unwell, a funeral is being planned or a relative needs collecting from hospital.
We move quickly and keep you informed. Urgent same week service adds 25 percent. We tell you before we start.
For Kenyans in the USA, that kind of help can mean the difference between worry and calm at a hard time.
Documents
- KRA PIN support and yearly nil returns.
- Certificate of good conduct support.
- Document pickup and courier to the US.
- NTSA logbook transfer support.
Document tasks are some of the most common requests from Kenyans in the USA. Visa files, nursing boards and employers often want Kenyan papers fast.
Land and building
- Land search coordination with a licensed advocate.
- Property inspection visits.
- Construction monitoring with two site visits a month.
Students and young professionals
Many younger Kenyans in the USA are studying or starting careers. They often need transcripts, a HELB clearance or a certificate of good conduct.
These are small tasks with big deadlines. We treat them with the urgency they deserve.
Business
- Company registration support.
- Bank account opening support.
- Supplier verification visits.
Some Kenyans in the USA run side businesses at home or import Kenyan goods. Our ground checks help them see what is really happening.
How do Kenyans in the USA pay for services at home?
We quote in US dollars, so you know the exact figure in your own currency. No guessing exchange rates on our fee.
For Kenyans in the USA, that means a clear dollar figure, written down, before anything starts.
Clients pay by card, PayPal, bank or Mpesa. We confirm payment options with your quote.
The rule that protects you
You get a written quote first. You pay only after you approve it.
Government, courier and advocate fees are shown on their own lines. They are passed on at cost with receipts.
What about paying people in Kenya?
We do not hold your money for third parties. If a fundi, school or seller needs paying, we help you confirm the details so you pay them directly.
That keeps the money trail clean. It also means you always know who received what.
Sending money home safely
Many Kenyans in the USA send money through apps, banks or mobile money. Whatever you use, keep receipts and confirm names.
We do not give financial advice. We simply help you check that the person or business you are paying is real.
How do documents travel between Kenya and the US?
Many Kenyans in the USA need an original document from home. A certificate of good conduct for an immigration file.
A birth certificate. A title deed copy. A university transcript for a nursing board.
Document pickup and courier
We collect the original, photograph it and send it by international courier with tracking. Our fee is $75 plus courier at cost.
You get the tracking number on WhatsApp. You can follow the parcel all the way to your door.
Sending documents the other way
Sometimes papers need to travel from the US to Kenya, such as signed forms or a power of attorney. We tell you where to send them and confirm when they arrive.
Our ship documents from Kenya page explains the courier process in more detail.
Proof of delivery
When we hand a document to an office, you get a photo of the stamped receipt. When we post one, you get the courier slip.
Need an apostille?
Some US offices ask for Kenyan documents with an apostille. We can coordinate that step with the right office and a licensed professional where needed.
For Kenyans in the USA dealing with immigration or professional boards, this can save weeks of back and forth.
Buying land or building as Kenyans in the USA
Land is close to the heart of many Kenyans in the USA. It is also where the most painful losses happen.
Before any deposit
Get a land search done. Our land search in Kenya service coordinates it with a licensed advocate for $120 plus government and advocate fees.
Then get a visit. We walk the plot, check beacons and talk to neighbours.
Kenyans in the USA are often targeted by fake land sellers because they cannot visit. A search plus a visit closes that gap. See how to avoid land fraud in Kenya for warning signs.
While building
Our construction monitoring plan covers two site visits a month with a report for $390 per month. You see the same corners photographed each time.
Many Kenyans in the USA build a family home in stages, as money allows. Regular visits make sure each stage is finished before the next payment goes out.
Read our guide on how to build a house in Kenya from abroad for the full picture.
Keeping your KRA record clean from the US
Many Kenyans in the USA got a KRA PIN before they left. That PIN still expects a return every year.
It is easy to forget when you pay taxes in the US too. Yet an unfiled Kenyan PIN can slow down a land sale or a clearance certificate later.
KRA’s page for Kenyans living abroad says every PIN holder must file through iTax by the due date. It also says it is advisable to file a nil return when there is nothing to declare.
The deadline
KRA lists 30th June of the following year as the individual return deadline. That is Kenyan time, which means early afternoon on the 30th if you live on the West Coast.
How we help
Our KRA nil returns from abroad service files for $40 per year. If you are locked out of iTax, we help you get back in.
KRA also encourages Kenyans abroad to visit home missions for filing support. That can help if you live near one.
For most Kenyans in the USA, though, the nearest mission is a long drive or a flight. Filing through us is simpler.
Visiting home soon? Make the trip count
Many Kenyans in the USA fly home once a year or less. Every day of that trip is precious.
We help you plan so the trip is for family, not for queues.
Before you land
Send us your list a few weeks ahead. Documents to collect, offices to visit, plots to see.
We prepare what we can before you arrive. Forms are filled, appointments are lined up and papers are ready to sign.
At JKIA
We can meet you at the airport and take you home or to your hotel. Airport pickup or drop at JKIA is $60.
If relatives are flying in from the US for a wedding or a funeral, we can collect them too. Each pickup is quoted upfront.
During your stay
If you need a plot visit, we drive you there and back. If you need a bank visit, we book it and go with you.
You spend your time with people, not in traffic and lines.
After you fly back
Some tasks finish after you leave. We follow them up and send proof, so nothing is left hanging.
This is how Kenyans in the USA can get a year of tasks done in one short trip, with the rest handled from Nairobi while they are back at work.

A simple example
Say you live in Minneapolis and want your father visited in Nairobi, a gift delivered for his birthday and your KRA return filed. That is $60, $60 plus the gift cost and $40.
You see the total in dollars on one written quote. You approve it and we get going.
See the full list on our pricing page or try the price calculator.
How do we keep you safe?
Trust is the whole job. Here is how we earn it.
- Written quote first. You see the price before anything happens.
- Pay only after approval. Nothing starts until you say yes.
- Photo and video proof. On every job, every time.
- Receipts for every fee. Government and courier costs passed on at cost.
- No hidden roles. We say plainly when a licensed advocate or agent is needed.
What a report looks like
Every job ends with a short report. Photos, a short video where it helps and a few plain sentences.
No jargon and no long essays. You can read it on your phone during a break at work.
If you want more detail, ask. We would rather give too much than too little.
Watch out for scams
Be careful with anyone who asks for urgent payment to a personal number. Be careful with offers that sound too easy.
If something feels off, send it to us first. We will tell you honestly what we think.
Scammers know that Kenyans in the USA are busy and far away. A second pair of eyes on the ground is the simplest defence.

Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs sits within the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. It focuses on the welfare and engagement of Kenyans abroad.
We are not part of government. We are a private ground team for practical tasks.
