Has a job offer, a vetting panel or a bank asked you for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad and you are not sure what your credit record in Kenya even says? That small request can cause a lot of worry.
Maybe you took a mobile loan in campus and forgot it. Maybe a bank account closed with a small overdraft after you moved. Maybe you have never borrowed at all and simply need proof.
Whatever the story, a CRB clearance certificate from abroad starts with one thing. You need to see your record, fix anything wrong and then get the paper.

What is a CRB clearance certificate?
CRB stands for credit reference bureau. Before you chase a CRB clearance certificate from abroad, it helps to know what the bureaus do. These are licensed companies that collect credit information from banks, saccos, mobile lenders and other credit providers.
Kenya has more than one licensed bureau.
A clearance certificate is a document from a bureau confirming your current status. Metropol, one of the bureaus, explains in its FAQ that its certificate of clearance confirms you currently have no non performing account.
Report or certificate?
These are two different things. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes with a CRB clearance certificate from abroad.
- Credit report: a full list of your accounts, balances and repayment history
- Clearance certificate: a short statement that you have no bad accounts at that moment
Most people should look at their report first. If the report shows a problem, sort it out. Then apply for the certificate.
How long is it valid?
Metropol’s FAQ says its certificate is valid only as of its issue date, because bureaus receive account updates daily. So time your CRB clearance certificate from abroad close to when you need to hand it in.
Who asks for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad?
In Kenya, a CRB clearance certificate from abroad is part of the standard vetting pack for many public and senior roles. It often sits alongside a police clearance, a HELB certificate and a KRA tax compliance certificate.
Common reasons we hear
- Applying for a public service or county job back home
- Vetting for a board seat, commission or senior appointment
- A Kenyan bank or sacco checking you before a loan or mortgage
- An employer abroad asking for proof of a clean financial record
- A landlord or partner wanting reassurance before a deal
If your request is for vetting, plan the whole pack at once. See our pages on the certificate of good conduct from abroad and the HELB clearance certificate from abroad.
Getting all of them in one go saves courier costs and stress. A CRB clearance certificate from abroad is often the quickest of the set once your record is clean.
Do you need certificates from more than one bureau?
Some panels name a specific bureau for your CRB clearance certificate from abroad. Others accept any licensed bureau. Read the request and, if unsure, ask the office in writing which bureau it wants.
What are your rights under Kenya’s credit bureau rules?
Kenya’s Credit Reference Bureau Regulations, 2020, published by the Central Bank of Kenya, give you clear rights. Knowing them helps a lot when you deal with a bureau from abroad.
A free report every year
Regulation 37(3) says you may get a copy of your credit report from each bureau at no charge at least once a year. It also gives a free copy within thirty days of an adverse action notice.
Small amounts are not listed
Regulation 18(2) says negative information cannot be submitted to a bureau where the amount does not exceed one thousand shillings. So a tiny unpaid balance of a few hundred shillings should not be on your record as negative.
Disputes have deadlines
If you dispute an entry, the rules set out timelines:
- The bureau must flag the item as under investigation and notify the lender within five working days
- The bureau must start its investigation within seven days
- The lender must finish its investigation within twenty one days of the dispute notice
- If the investigation is not done in twenty one days, the disputed information must be deleted as you asked
These rules matter for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad. They give you a clear process even from thousands of miles away. If a wrong listing is blocking you, a formal dispute is your strongest tool.
How do you get a CRB clearance certificate from abroad?
Every bureau runs its own process for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad, but the shape is similar. Here is how it usually works when we help someone overseas.
- Check your report. Request your free annual report from the bureau. Read every line.
- Sort any problems. Pay a genuine debt directly to the lender, or dispute a wrong entry with the bureau.
- Get proof the account is closed. Ask the lender for a letter or statement once a debt is cleared.
- Wait for the update. Lenders send updates to bureaus. Your report should change once they do.
- Apply for the certificate. Fill in the bureau’s request form and submit it with your ID.
- Collect and courier. We collect it where allowed and send it to you by tracked courier.
What Metropol asks for
Metropol’s FAQ describes its own steps. It says you fill in the credit request form, attach a copy of your ID and present your original ID for identification. It lists a cost of KSh 2,200, paid through M Pesa or to the bureau’s bank account.
The need to present an original ID is where a CRB clearance certificate from abroad gets tricky. We ask the bureau what it accepts from an agent, such as an authority letter with ID copies. If it will only deal with you in person, we tell you early.
Where do people abroad get stuck?
Most delays with a CRB clearance certificate from abroad are not about big debts. They come from small things left hanging when you moved.
A forgotten mobile loan
Mobile loans are easy to take and easy to forget. They are the single most common surprise when people check their record before a CRB clearance certificate from abroad. A balance left behind years ago may still show.
Check your report for lenders you do not recognise.
An old bank account
Accounts you stopped using can collect charges. If an overdraft built up, it may have been reported. Ask the bank for a final statement.
Standing surety for a friend
If you stood surety for a friend’s sacco loan and they stopped paying, it can show on your record. Talk to the sacco and the borrower.
A wrong listing
Sometimes the debt is not yours at all. Names get mixed up. Use the dispute rights in the regulations.
No way to show your ID
Bureaus often want to see an original ID. From overseas that is a real hurdle for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad. We find out what the bureau will accept and plan around it.
Paying the wrong account
Money sent from abroad without the right reference may not reach the debt. Always ask the lender for the exact payment details and a written confirmation.
How we help with your CRB clearance certificate from abroad
Think of us as your Nairobi desk for your CRB clearance certificate from abroad. You keep control of your accounts and your money. We do the walking.
- We explain your report in plain words once you share it with us
- We visit the bureau and ask what it needs from you and from an agent
- We carry letters between you, the bureau and any lender involved
- We follow up on disputes in person so they do not sit in a queue
- We submit your request with the authority letter and ID copies the bureau accepts
- We collect the certificate where an agent may collect
- We send it to you by tracked courier, with photos before sealing
Every step comes with photo proof. You see the counter receipt and the certificate before it leaves Nairobi.
What we do not do
We never pay debts for you. We never hold your money. We never negotiate with lenders as your legal representative.
If your case turns into a legal dispute, we bring in a licensed Kenyan advocate. A CRB clearance certificate from abroad should not need one, but it is good to know the option is there.
Clearing a genuine debt from overseas
If your report shows a real debt, the cleanest route to a CRB clearance certificate from abroad is to pay it and get proof. It is often smaller than people fear.
A calm order of events
- Ask the lender for a written statement of the exact amount
- Ask for the official payment details in writing
- Pay directly from your own account
- Ask the lender for a clearance letter once the payment shows
- Ask the lender to update the bureau
- Check your report again after the update
Settling for less
Some lenders accept a reduced settlement. If you agree one, get it in writing before you pay. Ask how it will show on your record.
Keep everything
Save every statement, receipt and letter in one folder. A clean paper trail makes your CRB clearance certificate from abroad far easier to defend. If anything goes wrong later, you have proof in seconds.
We can visit the lender’s office to collect the clearance letter if they will not email it. That letter is often the final key to your CRB clearance certificate from abroad.
A note on timing
Plan your CRB clearance certificate from abroad with a little buffer. The regulations set dispute deadlines, but they do not set how fast a lender reports a payment. Allow some time between paying and applying and check your report first.
What if you have never borrowed in Kenya?
Some people are asked for a CRB clearance certificate from abroad even though they have never taken a loan in Kenya. That is common for foreign nationals and for Kenyans who left straight after school.
A bureau can still confirm your status. Your report may simply show no accounts, or very few.
Why a thin file can still help
A vetting panel mostly wants to know you have no bad debts. A clean report with nothing on it answers that question.
Ask the bureau what it can issue for someone with no credit history. Some people get a certificate. Others are given a report that shows no adverse listings, which some panels accept.
Check you really have no accounts
Many people forget the small things. A student phone loan, a sacco membership or an old store card can create a record. Run your free annual report first to be sure.
Foreign nationals who lived in Kenya
If you once worked in Kenya, you may have had a bank account, a car loan or a mobile money line. Those can all appear on a credit report. Bring your old passport and alien card details so the bureau can find the right record.
Plan the timing
Because a certificate reflects your status on its issue date, apply close to your deadline. A CRB clearance certificate from abroad that is months old may be refused by a strict panel.
Our help here
We visit the bureau, ask what applies to someone with your history and submit the right request. Then we collect and courier the result to you. It is usually a single errand once the bureau confirms its process.
